Hey Jake,

When you use 4 intermediate clutches do you use the 4L80E center support or are you still able to use the TH400 center support? Also if you do use the 4L80E center support which one do you use? Are they all interchangeable? I heard they were different throughout the years with the 4L80E.

Thanks - Justin

It uses the stock Th400 center support, 4L80E pieces, there is more to it than just steels.

Hey Jake,

What parts do you use? The 4L80E piston and put it in the TH400 center support? Then do you use the 4L80E frictions and a combination of TH400 and 4L80E steels to find the right amount of clearance? I would like to try this because I have a 6 clutch direct drum and have modified my forward drum piston for 6 clutches. The sound of having 4 intermediate pistons versus 3 sounds pretty good to me. Can you post some info on how to do the conversion or email me about it? Thanks - Justin

Justin call me at the shop. Number in the web address in my sig.

The piston is the same, there is no room to change the int piston the 400/4L80E.

When will you be finishing the rebuild? I am very detail oriented, and want to know absolutely everything about a project I am about to begin. I am especially interested in the dual feed topic.

Scott Stuart

More to follow as I finish this build.
I will cover intermeidate cluitch installation, direct drum assembly, forward drum assembly, pump inspection and assembly, air checks, dual feeding modifications , 34 element intermediate sprag vs. stock 16 element and later roller clutch as well as various assembly tips to improve the TH400.[/QUOTE]

Scott,
The dual feeding mod was covered in depth in the post. Read the entire post and ask any specific questions you may have.

There is an Army Technical Manual posted here with specific step by step instructions for basic rebuild.

Halfway down the page, look for 3L80 links.

Great build up, but I have a few questions. When you block off the feed for the 2-3 accumulator, what is the purpose of re-installing the piston? Also, do you use the int. band? If not, what steps are taken for this? Is there any oriface that needs to be blocked in the valve body? I've also seen some valvebody kits that do the dual feed to the directs, but the left some sealing rings off in the reverse piston. I'm not sure if that is related.....is that actually necessary?

The piston in the VB is retained to keep the intermediate servo from coming out of it's bore. The servo has pressure on it to keep it in the un-applied position in all but manual 2nd gear.
I retain the band on my manual/automatic valve body builds.
No other holes are blocked in the VB except the 2-3 accum feed.
The sealing rings left off are in the reverse manual VB and transbrake applications. They are for the 1-2 accumulator.

Check ball issues

Jake,
I am just getting to the part with the checkballs, and have run into another problem. In your picture, the #1 checkball (which according to the ATSG manual can be left out as you have shown) is not there. If you go to the TCI website and look at the instructions page for #4000000 which is the tranScat shift kit for the 400, shows that they leave in the #1 checkball, but remove the one just above and to the left of the center support bolt hole.(I believe it is the 1-2 shift checkball) Is this a misprint on their part, or is there something I am missing here?

Scott

I run 5 checkballs usually.
Locations are as follows.
